In understanding adult abuse, it is recognised that when a person’s rights, independence, and dignity are not valued and respected, this may be intentional, or a result of a lack of information, or failure to respond appropriately. Notwithstanding this, violating the rights of adults with a disability and older adults is abuse. Adults can be affected by abuse at different times in their lives, however adults living with physical and intellectual disability, and older adults due to age and stage of life, may find themselves at greater risk of adult abuse, hence the need to safeguard and protect adults at risk through planning ahead, care planning, empowerment and supporting adults at risk retain and regain autonomy over their life choices.
